BEHIND THE SCENES | Keep Downtown Turning Around Kimberly Van Dyk, Downtown Development Director During 2019 and the beginning of 2020, Wilson Downtown Development announced many great projects, both new-build and redevelopment of existing properties in Historic Downtown Wilson. Even though things have changed globally in March and April, we believe our #downtownturnaround can keep moving forward! We want you to know that the health and safety of the Wilson community at large, as well as that of downtown’s residents, workers, and visitors, is of the utmost importance to us in downtown development. We also want you to know that, right now, downtown businesses and nonprofits need your help more than ever. |

$100 Million Dollar Pine Street Redevelopment Project Approved by City Council The Wilson City Council approved a pivotal agreement for the Pine-Nash Street area of Historic Downtown Wilson at its February 20 meeting. The Master Development Agreement with NSV Wilson follows the October 2019 announcement of a large-scale redevelopment of that area, including a new residential/retail mixed-use development and a Wilson Family YMCA. The entire project, which includes the new BB&T/now Truist building brings nearly $100 million in investment in Historic Downtown Wilson. When that major announcement was made, the City also announced a forthcoming agreement with NSV Wilson and a comprehensive parking solution for the area.

Pine / Tarboro Street Conversation Delayed The COVID-19 outbreak has forced a delay in the a long-planned change in downtown traffic patterns. Wilson officials had requested the one-way to two-way conversion project of Pine and Tarboro streets to the NC Department of Transportation in order to improve traffic flow and increase economic development in downtown. The city made infrastructure improvements along these state-maintained roads in preparation for the conversion, with Wilson agreeing to take over the maintenance once the project is complete. However, the COVID 19 pandemic has changed the way NC DOT able to operate, so the conversion, which as slated to begin in late March, is delayed. More details may be found here on the City of Wilson website. |
